The Board of Trustees for the SDUHSD held a special meeting on September 30.

Superintendent search firm provides summary of public comments

JG Consulting, the firm hired by the District to conduct a search for a new superintendent, presented a report summarizing the public input on the desired characteristics of the new superintendent.

JG conducted 43 meetings and town halls, and received over 700 responses to their online survey. Their report can be found here.

Applications for a new superintendent will remain open through October 5th, and the Board will have a special meeting on October 6th to review the candidates and decide who to interview in person. The current timeline remains on track to select a superintendent at the October 14th Board meeting.

As a reminder, the evaluation of individual superintendent candidates and the selection of a finalist is a confidential process to protect the applicants. Comments were solicited from the public regarding the desired skill set and experience of the next superintendent to further inform the board in its selection process.

Future Board Meetings will be Virtual

The State of California created new rules that allow for School Boards and other public meetings to remain virtual for the foreseeable future. A governing board must actively vote to have its board meetings virtual every month if it wishes to continue to have virtual meetings.

Our Board voted unanimously that our meetings for the next month will remain virtual like they have been since the beginning of the pandemic.

Pledge of Allegiance will be Said Every Day at Every School

California law requires a daily patriotic event at each public school, and the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag satisfies that requirement.

Over the years some of our schools stopped saying the pledge. The Board voted to reinstate the pledge of allegiance as a daily ritual at all our schools.

Equity and Access update - no CRT being taught

The Board was provided with an update on one of the District's initiatives, "Equity and Access".

There has been concern by some in our community that we may be, or are considering, teaching "Critical Race Theory" (CRT) in our District. This is an topical issue at school boards across the country.

District staff confirmed that we are not currently teaching CRT and have no plans to do so. Board President Muir asked Superintendent Lynch to draft language for a resolution to be considered at our next Board meeting to adopt a policy that we will not teach CRT in our schools.
